(Analysis of 2003 Data)

ONCOLOGY DATA MANAGEMENT
By Adair Baker, RHIT, CTR, Oncology Data Coordinator and
Yolanda Topin, Cancer Data Abstractor.

Oncology Data Management uses Electronic Registry Systems software to collect and maintain statistical data and lifetime follow-up on patients diagnosed and/or treated at Springhill Medical Center.

SURVEY:Springhill Memorial Hospital underwent survey by the Commission on Cancer in February of 2004. We received program approval as a community hospital cancer program through 2007.

CANCER CONFERENCE: Twelve multidisciplinary cancer conferences were held during 2003. Forty-nine cases were presented. Average physician attendance was 6; average ancillary attendance was 35. Conferences are held the fourth Thursday of every month and lunch is provided. One hour CME is awarded for each conference.

DATA: In 2003 we added 607 cases to the database, bringing the total cases to 4,307. Follow-up rate is 90%. FORDS reporting guidelines were implemented in accordance with CoC requirements. Data was reported to the NCDB and we participated in a special prostate cancer study.

OUTREACH AND EDUCATION:Springhill Medical Center staff worked with the American Cancer Society programs such as Relay for Life, Stretch, Us Too and Look Good/Feel Better. SMC also provides public education through the "Family Matters" magazine, seminars sponsored by the Family Center, and continuing education by Staff Development.
