A Message from Mr. Jeff St. Clair, President & CEO

2012 was a great year for Springhill Medical Center! Our team has earned state and national recognition for outstanding quality. We received accolades from The Joint Commission, Alabama Productivity Center, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama, the FDA, and the American Heart Association. Quality is at the core of everything we do to provide the best healthcare in Mobile! Springhill Medical Center also was designated a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama for meeting clinically validated quality standards and delivering better overall outcomes in patient care.

We started the year off by bringing home five prestigious awards from the 2011 Alabama Quality Award Team Showcase, which recognized high achievement in quality from all industries, not just healthcare. The Alabama Quality Award Team Showcase is a highly-sought-after and prized designation, and Springhill’s teams brought home an award in every category entered — an outstanding accomplishment! The Awards are based on performance criteria that include the following:
• excellence in leadership
• strategic planning
• attention to customers and other stakeholders
• market focus
• process management
• analysis of organizational performance

Springhill’s Medication Error Committee team, Hospital 30-Day Readmissions-Process Improvement team, NIMS (infection) Reduction 2006-2010 team, Postoperative Blood Sugar Management team, and the Newborn Screenings team all won in their categories. In fact, our Nursery is one of only three hospitals in the state that was recognized for best newborn screening specimens. The Alabama Quality Award is administered by the Alabama Productivity Center, an Alabama Technology Network center and a nonprofit outreach component of The University of Alabama.

The hospital’s IT Department took home the top prize in the Best Healthcare category from the annual Outsourcing Excellence Awards. This prestigious honor recognizes the world’s best outsourcing relationships. The IT Department has adopted and mirrored the hospital’s own approach to the delivery of high quality care.

In addition, we were recognized by the American Heart Association for treatment of myocardial infarction patients. This means SMC delivered patient care from the latest scientific guidelines — guidelines shown to raise patients’ survival rates and lower their risk of readmission within 30 days for the same problem.

On Nov. 14, Springhill Medical Center was granted The Joint Commission’s accreditation for all services surveyed under the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals. Additionally, many of our service lines received accreditation by governing organizations in their fields. For example, the Women’s Diagnostic Center achieved the highest FDA inspection compliance grade for the fifth year in a row. The Southeast Regional Center for Sleep/Wake Disorders at Springhill again joins the ranks of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s (AASM) accredited centers, which provide the highest quality of patient care.

More than 113,000 patients have been cared for in our hospital in 2012, by an outstanding team of 495 physicians and more than 600 nurses, healthcare professionals and support staff. In 2012, we saw approximately 34,000 patients in our emergency department, where operational efficiencies combined with clinical excellence resulted in some of our highest volumes ever. The average treatment time was around 91 minutes, which is very good compared to national norms. Myocardial Infarction (AMI) patients receiving Percutaneus Coronary Intervention (heart cath) within the national benchmarking of 90 minutes of hospital arrival for the year was 100% with the average time being 61 minutes compared to the state’s percentage of 95% and the national percentage of 94%. The hospital staff has worked extremely hard to improve patient flow through the ED. From ED arrival to admission to a nursing unit, the average time was 212 minutes for the first three quarters of 2012. These numbers better the state average time, which is 240 minutes and the national average time of 277 minutes. SMC’s ED remains the only one in the area where all of our physicians are board certified in emergency medicine.

None of our accomplishments would have been possible without the drive and determination of our outstanding medical staff, our wonderful employees, and the support of professionals like you! Your faith in us has enabled us to excel and will enable us to provide quality care for the community in the uncertain times ahead.

SMC Vascular Lab Attains New Accreditation

Springhill Medical Center’s Vascular Laboratory has attained recognition for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease. The facility achieved accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). Participation in the accreditation process demonstrates the laboratory’s attention to a high level of patient care and quality testing.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing society over 83.7 billion dollars each year in health services, medications and lost work time due to disability. One American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disorders of the heart and blood vessels.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death and disability in this country, with 500,000 new strokes occurring annually. Each year, 2 million people in the United States alone develop deep vein thrombosis-blood clots in the veins.

Early detection of these life-threatening vascular diseases is possible through the use of noninvasive vascular testing techniques performed within vascular laboratories. Springhill Medical Center’s Vascular Laboratory is one of a growing number of vascular laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to meet or exceed the ICAVL standards for noninvasive vascular testing.

The ICAVL is a non-profit organization established with the support of eleven medical societies including physicians, technologist and sonographers that represent medical specialties including cardiology, neurology, radiology, vascular medicine, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, internal medicine and biology. ICAVL accreditation is valid for a period of three years.

Public can now access information on healthcare-associated infections in Alabama hospitals

Starting today, Alabamians will have access to information on healthcare-associated infections as reported by the state’s hospitals. The report, published by the Alabama Department of Public Health, provides hospital-specific infection data for several types of infections and can be found at

www.adph.org/hai.

“The law requiring hospital infection reporting was passed in 2009 with cooperation from Alabama’s hospitals, ADPH, and the state’s legislature, most notably its sponsor, retired Sen. Bobby Denton,” said Dr. Donald Williamson, state health officer. “Since that time we have worked with our advisory council comprised of hospital executives, infection practitioners, physicians, business leaders and other key stakeholders to develop a program that will provide good information to consumers and will allow providers to have comparisons for benchmarking. I am proud of the work and know it will be helpful in continuing to decrease the rate of healthcare-associated infections in our state.”

Dr. Williamson added that the report should not take the place of discussions between patients and their physicians when choosing a hospital. “While this report is important and helpful, it should not be used as the sole factor in the selection of a hospital,” Dr. Williamson stated.

“Our advisory council suggested we begin the infection reporting program with categories of infections reported from certain units in the hospital,” said Dr. Williamson. “The categories included: surgical site infections of the colon and abdomen, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and central line-associated blood stream infections. We believe these provide a good base for our program and cover infections that are important to good patient care.”

Keith Granger, CEO of Trinity Medical Center and chairman of the Alabama Hospital Association’s Quality Task Force, expressed support for the legislation, stating that hospital leaders were pleased to have been a part of this important work and remain committed to a strong infection prevention program.

“Our first report is very positive,” added Dr. Williamson. “When compared to the rest of the nation, Alabama’s hospitals performed better than the national average on three of the four categories reported and similar to the national average on the other. We congratulate hospitals’ infection practitioners for their diligence in combatting the spread of infection and providing a safe environment for patient care.”

Granger added that hospital leaders understand that their work on infection prevention will never be done and emphasized that hospitals are on a continual journey to provide better care. “Today, we’re also launching a new website designed to provide healthcare consumers with information on how they can get more involved in their own care,” said Granger. “The site is www.jointhehealthjourney.comand it provides links to this infection report, as well as other sources for Alabama-specific hospital data. It also has glossary of healthcare terminology, suggested information to discuss with your doctor and many other helpful resources.”

SMC First in Mobile To Offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

Springhill Medical Center continues its dedication to the residents of the Gulf Coast community by bringing the most up-to-date technologically advanced procedures to the area. The hospital is one of only two centers in the state to offer the FDA approved Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

TAVR is a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure that uses a catheter-based technique to replace the aortic valve for patients with severe aortic stenosis. This procedure is typically for patients who are older and have multiple conditions which put them at high risk or deemed in-operable for the traditional open heart procedure. The TAVR procedure, in coordination with The Valve Center, is performed in Springhill Medical Center’s state-of-the-art hybrid catheterization lab by a multi-disciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, imaging experts with the support of Springhill Medical Center’s dedicated heart team.

TAVR offers severe aortic stenosis patients, who formerly may have faced a life expectancy of less than two years, to have the potential to receive a new heart valve without undergoing the open heart procedure. TAVR will not only greatly diminish their chance of an early death, but it will also improve their quality of life.

Springhill Medical Center is one of a select few in the country and the first on the Gulf Coast to offer this innovative technology.

SMC reduces report time, saves $85,000

Summary

Founded in 1975 by Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Wallace, Springhill Medical Center is a 252-bed acute care hospital accredited by the Joint Commission. From its beginning, Springhill has embraced advanced technology, including a 320-slice CT, high-field MRI and digital mammography. The hospital currently offers the latest diagnostic equipment across all clinical specialties, and has accredited programs including MRI, CT and mammography (ACR/MQSa).
Springhill’s legacy of technology was instrumental in the medical center’s decision to implement Nuance Healthcare’s industry-leading PowerScribe® 360 | Reporting solution. Since the system was implemented in December 2011, the overall benefits have far exceeded expectations: self-editing has replaced transcription, reporting times have been drastically reduced, patient care has improved, and significant savings have been realized.

Challenge

• Select speech reporting solution that could integrate with the hospital’s EMR and PACS
• Enable staff to create reports more quickly
• Increase reporting efficiency

Implementation
Because Springhill Medical Centers does not utilize a RIS, they needed a reporting system that was compatible with the hospital’s electronic medical record system, which did not provide transcription or distribution capability. Seamless integration with the PACS was also important, as was optimized voice recognition. “The learning curve for voice recognition is much faster than it was five years ago. The software is much more intuitive.” said Dr. Mark V. Johnson, a radiologist at Springhill Medical Center. The clinical and business benefits were obvious to staff early on. “The potential savings was the first thing that caught our eye, but we immediately realized the potential benefits of faster turnaround,” said Laura Haas, Director of Radiology. Those benefits include faster availability of written patient information, improved patient care, elimination of the need for radiologists to present verbal reports, enhanced clinical efficiency and increasingly contented physicians and patients.

Steps To Success
Throughout planning and implementation Nuance Healthcare provided essential direction and other assistance:
• Engage key participants, identify goals, review roll-out plan and timeline, create generous testing and implement action plans.
• Observe staff and referrers, providing technical assistance that enhances reporting.
• Provide follow-up to ensure that performance standards are met.

Solution
• Deploy PowerScribe 360 | Reporting
• Utilize enhanced speech recognition engine, self editing, and structured reporting

Results
• All radiologists now using PowerScribe 360 | Reporting
• Final report time reduced from seven hours to five minutes
• Requests from referring physicians for ‘call results’ have been virtually eliminated
• Time to clinical diagnosis and time to treatment reduced

Improved Physician Satisfaction and Financial Operations
After one year, Springhill expects to realize a return on investment of nearly $85,000 by eliminating all transcription costs. Additionally, the final report turnaround time has dropped from an average of seven hours to five minutes and nearly 100% of requests for ‘call results’ have been eliminated. Emergency physicians no longer spend precious time receiving verbal reports from radiology, and the radiologists have embraced the speech recognition, self-editing and structured reporting capabilities. “Our radiologists have been pleasantly surprised by the ease and efficiency of the system,” Haas said. “They realize that healthcare is moving in the direction of more automated reporting and are definitely on board with all that
PowerScribe 360 | Reporting has to offer.”

SMC Recognized for Flu Vaccinations

Springhill Medical Center’s participation in the Joint Commission Resources’ (JCR) Flu Vaccination Challenge was recognized with a Bronze Recognition Award for increasing the number of participants. SMC has participated in this national program to increase flu vaccination rates among health care workers for 30 years in an ongoing effort to raise its flu vaccination rate among staff. During the 2010-11 flu season, SMC achieved a staff vaccination rate of 80 percent among health care workers. Springhill aims to further increase that number during the current flu season.

Beth Beck, Director of Infection Prevention and Control at Springhill Medical Center, said that this recognition shows the progress the hospital is making.

For the 2010-11 flu season, JCR challenged Springhill Medical Center and other health care organizations across the country to achieve seasonal flu vaccination rates of 75, 85 or 95 percent among their staff to attain a Bronze, Silver or Gold Recognition Award, respectively. Of the organizations that submitted data (n=826), two thirds (66 percent) met the challenge by achieving a 75 percent or higher seasonal flu vaccination rate among staff. Seventeen percent achieved a Gold vaccination level, 22 percent achieved a Silver vaccination level, and 27 percent achieved a Bronze vaccination level. With help from the Flu Vaccination Challenge, approximately 780,000 health care workers across the country were vaccinated against the flu, including 978 health care workers at SMC.

Flu vaccination of health care workers is important not only to help protect themselves, but also to reduce the likelihood that patients or the individuals served will be exposed to the flu. The current national flu vaccination average among health care workers is nearly 64 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Influenza vaccination of adults has shown to be cost-effective by reducing both direct medical costs and indirect costs from absenteeism. Several studies demonstrated that the vaccination of adults less than 65 years of age resulted in fewer healthcare provider visits, fewer lost workdays, fewer days working with reduced effectiveness, and a decrease in antibiotic use.

The flu is a contagious and potentially deadly infection. Flu viruses are mainly spread from person to person via droplets from coughing or sneezing. Transmission may also occur through direct or indirect contact, such as when touching something already laden with the flu virus, then touching the eyes, nose or mouth. Every year in the United States, between 5 and 20 percent of the population may become infected with the flu. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on average, more than 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized each year for respiratory and heart illnesses associated with seasonal flu infections. Additionally, over a period of 30 years, between 1976 and 2006, estimates of flu-associated deaths in the United States ranged from a low of approximately 3,000 to a high of approximately 49,000 people.

According to the CDC, annual flu vaccination is the most effective method for preventing flu virus infection and its complications. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends annual flu vaccination for all individuals 6 months of age and older. While flu vaccination benefits all age groups, certain people have a higher risk for flu complications, such as individuals 50 years of age and older and people with chronic medical conditions. It is important that these people and those in close contact with them – including all health care personnel – continue to be a primary focus for vaccination efforts.

Joint Commission Resources (JCR), a not-for-profit affiliate of The Joint Commission, launched the Flu Vaccination Challenge during the 2008-09 flu season to help increase flu vaccination among health care workers. Now entering its fourth year, JCR continues to challenge health care organizations to achieve at least a 75 percent flu vaccination rate among staff during this flu season. The 2011-12 Flu Vaccination Challenge will continue through spring 2012. Health care organizations can visit FluVaccinationChallenge.com to participate in this year’s Challenge and find additional resources.

Funding and other editorial support for the Flu Vaccination Challenge has been provided to JCR by GlaxoSmithKline.

"Cool" New Physical Therapy Device

In a study comparing cold air to nitrogen gas and ice bags, cold air increased the threshold of pain twice that of the ice bag application in half the time. Compared with nitrogen gas, cold air increased the threshold 66% higher and returned to above baseline post treatment faster, demonstrating a thermo-physical difference. Cold air is considered more effective than ice bags and gas as it is theorized that the rapid spike in cold to heat return leads to a circulatory response, and the constant cold air modality can penetrate the deeper tissue structure without the short term risk of cold damage posed with the same duration of treatment using gas as the cooling agent.

A new device being used by SMC's Physical Therapy Department, the C200, reaches temperatures of -40 degrees F. This has been demonstrated to produce more beneficial results compared to normal 20-minute localized icing. The C200 localized cryotherapy device takes in ambient room-temperature air and chills it before delivering it to the specidfic areas of the body undergoing application.

The C200 is recommended for use in a setting where moderate repeated treatments over a short duration are needed. The device can accommodate multiple 1-minute treatments and does not require signifcant time for the compressor to reload for optimal air flow temperature.

Lower skin temperature causes a more productive shock or "Cryo effect," stimulating blood vessel constriction and dilation in the injured area. The Cryo effect causes the body to produce a greater blood flow with oxygen rich blood delivered to damaged areas to improve recovery times by significantly reducing inflammation and accelerating tissue regeneration.

Springhill's Steve Goren Honored as Statewide Hospital Hero

BIRMINGHAM – Steve Goren, RN, BSN, director cardiac rehab/pulmonary therapy/mitral valve prolapse at Springhill Medical Center, was recently honored as a statewide “Hospital Hero” at a luncheon in Birmingham hosted by the Alabama Hospital Association (AlaHA).

The association’s ninth annual contest is an effort to honor the dedication of hospital employees and to highlight health careers. Up to 10 local Hospital Heroes were chosen in each of seven regional areas of the state, and from that pool, 10 men and women were selected as statewide heroes.

Steve Goren, RN, BSN, has been with Springhill Medical Center since 2003 when he took over a new program – cardiac rehab/pulmonary therapy/mitral valve prolapse – in its early stages of operation. He is attributed with growing the program from 2,000 patient visits per year in 2003 to the current level of 10,000 patient visits per year. With 29 years of health care experience, Mr. Goren has been a key member on several important hospital committees as part of the hospital’s ongoing efforts to improve patient care. These include the team that reviews cardiac cases to ensure all of the proper clinical steps are being taken to ensure a successful outcome, the team that works to improve the hospital’s diabetes program and expand offerings for patients with diabetes, and the team that strives to reduce readmissions for patients with heart failure.

A colleague said, “What’s most impressive about Steve is his willingness to take on additional responsibilites, such as participating in community lectures and various health fairs, to educate the public about health risks related to pulmonary and cardiac health.” He is also very active with the American Lung Association’s camp for children with pulmonary issues, volunteering since 1992 and donating at least a week of his time every year in addition to other time spent in preparation for the camp.

Springhill President/CEO Mr. Jeff St. Clair said, “Steve is so deserving of this award because he truly cares about his patients and has raised the bar on our program here. He is constantly making improvements that benefit his programs, our patients, the hospital, and the community. He takes on a multitude of additional responsibilities with a smile and is always looking for more ways to help patients.”

There was also one physician selected as the state’s Hospital Physician Hero, John M. Kerr, II, M.D., of Marion Regional Medical Center in Hamilton.

“The men and women we have honored truly represent the best in health care,” said J. Michael Horsley, FACHE, president of the Alabama Hospital Association. “Each of these dedicated individuals views their profession as more than a job; they consider it a calling.”

In addition to Goren, the other Heroes recognized included: Darryl Nevell Searcy, grounds consultant, D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital, Brewton; Libby Junkin, R.T., (R)(CT) (ARRT), radiology department advanced registry technician, DCH Regional Medical Center, Tuscaloosa; Deborah Owen, M.Ed., LPC, director of psychiatric services, East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika; Bobbie Edwards, central sterile technician, Flowers Hospital, Dothan; Jerria Carter, RN – Radiation Oncology, Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Gadsden; Tiffany Watkins, RN, neonatal intensive care unit, Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville; Kay Walters, MBA, RRT-NPS, AE-C, director, respiratory care, Jackson Hospital, Montgomery; Samuel Curtis Shortt, RN, telemetry, Southeast Alabama Medical Center, Dothan; and Sherry Cole, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS, cardiovascular clinical nurse specialist, Trinity Medical Center, Birmingham.
Springhill Medical Center Brands Corporate Wellness Program

Along with several exciting new changes to Springhill Medical Center’s corporate wellness program comes a new program name. Now known as Body of Wellth, the program features new initiatives to enhance the existing program.

In 2007, Springhill Medical Center invested in a free wellness initiative for the Mobile workforce. The vision required a commitment of time, materials, resources, along with physicians and medical staff with a dedicated passion to educate, motivate and serve others.

The Springhill Medical Center Body of Wellth program is designed to assist local organizations with implementing corporate wellness strategies that benefit their employees through health risk assessments, lifestyle management programs, and disease management programs. SMC’s initiative focuses on creating a “culture of health” in the workplace, resulting in a measurable reduction in healthcare costs, increased productivity, reduced absenteeism, and improved morale. One of the new initiatives offers detailed plans to reduce healthcare costs specific to each organization.

Every year, the American economy loses an estimated $260 billion in production overhead because of absences and low productivity caused by health issues. The Body of Wellth program helps to reduce this number and provide a healthy and productive work place. Employees recognize the program as a corporate benefit, feeling a sense of loyalty and responsibility. Even more exciting, while Body of Wellth can become part of a corporate lifestyle and philosophy, employees are having fun, are motivated and look forward to Biometric Testing, Health Challenges, Health Fairs, and organized activities.

The Body of Wellth program is an investment in a company’s most important resource —its employees. Studies have proven that when employees feel both physically and mentally well there is an increase in productivity, lower absenteeism, and higher morale. To a company’s bottom line, the Body of Wellth program can significantly reduce health care costs. This program has already gained momentum in many corporations and will continue to grow and improve over the next several years.

Garin Danner, Director of Human Resources at The SSI Group, established a wellness program at his company in 2009 and shortly afterward partnered with SMC to enhance the program with the hospital’s Body of Wellth offerings. “We partnered with SMC to assist in the endeavor,” Danner explains, “and through our collaborative efforts we have been successful in improving our employees’ health and have reduced their healthcare expenses through our wellness initiatives. We are excited to continue this relationship and build an even better wellness initiative.

Springhill Medical Center is a 252-bed acute care hospital accredited by The Joint Commission. Since 1975, Springhill has grown and expanded its services in the southwest Alabama. Today, SMC includes the hospital, a unique and comprehensive heart center, senior residence, sleep center, athletic club, and orthopaedic surgery center.

Springhill Medical Center

Dear Ms. Shirley Ezell:

Congratulations! This letter serves to notify you that your facility will be recognized as one of three Alabama birthing hospitals having the lowest rate for rejected newborn screening specimens during the period of January 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011. This is an outstanding achievement.

As part of this recognition, you will receive a plaque from the State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson, during the Alabama Newborn Screening Conference to be held on Aug. 19, 2011.

Also, in our mission to continually improve newborn screening practices in the state, we require participation in a thirty minute session to discuss the practices your facility has put into place to ensure consistent newborn screening specimen collection results. The focus of your discussion should include:

What changes in practice have led to your success?

What is the "one thing" that made a big difference?

Do you feel that a change in attitude of your staff has contributed to the improvement? If so, how did this change in attitude come about?

Again, congratulations and we look forward to seeing you in August.

4th Qtr Seasonal Defense designed to keep immune system healthy during flu season

By CASANDRA ANDREWS
Staff Reporter

The possibilities of a healthy immune system fascinate Leslie James. After all, it is likely the reason some people rarely get sick and others seem to pick up every bug that comes along. The way James sees it, a diet rich in certain vitamins, minerals and herbs can boost a body’s natural defenses and even fight off some illnesses. Trouble is, she says, most Americans don’t eat enough of the right foods they need—such as garlic, citrus fruits, berries and nuts—for optimum immune system health. Which is why the local dietician spent two years and much of her savings developing a formula for a dietary supplement, 4th Qtr Seasonal Defense, that she recently introduced to the Mobile market.

James, 38, said she evaluated other supplements on the market and found them lacking: “I just saw that there was such a need for it out there.” The product includes a complete combination of immune boosting ingredients, James said, so those who take it “can have a fighting chance at having a healthy immune system.” After much thought, James said she chose the name because flu season typically begins in the fourth quarter of the year. “And your first line of defense against catching the virus is having a healthy immune system,” she said. James’ supplement is featured in a catalog called Sleep Solutions that is mailed to about 650,000 people across the U.S.

“The upfront cost has been a lot but I so believe in this product and know there is nothing out there like it,” James said. “I have put heart and soul and every drop of money I have so far into this.” For nearly two decades the Hospital Dietitian encountered patients hospitalized with diseases including influenza. Eventually she began to wonder if those same people would get as sick if they’d had a stronger immune system before exposure to the disease. The quest to find that answer led James to spend more than two years researching and ultimately creating the formula.

In 2002, the American Medical Association released findings on how vitamins affect chronic disease prevention. According to a review of other studies, the AMA found that some group of patients are at higher risk for vitamin deficiency. “Many physicians may be unaware of common food sources of vitamins or unsure which vitamins they should recommend for their patients,” according to the findings. The AMA study noted that vitamin excess is possible with supplementation, “particularly for fat soluble vitamins.
Inadequate intake of several vitamins has been linked to chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis.” James maintains that proper vitamin levels are crucial. The Clinical Nutrition Manager at Springhill Medical Center in Mobile, she earned a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from Auburn University, and has spent more than 17 years working in the field of nutrition. After searching the Internet for a manufacturer, James settled on a Vitamin maker near Atlanta. In late July, James said, she finished the formula, had the name trademarked, then submitted it to the vitamin maker.

She received the first shipment of 450 bottles in September. Along the way she paid a local company to film a commercial and asked a friend to build a Web site. She’s in the early stages, she said, of pitching the product to chain drug stores. The supplement, now available on her Web site, www.4thQtrSeasonal.com, sells for just under $25 for a 30-day supply. “I’ve sold out my first shipment,” James said. “I’m working on the second one.”
