Special Procedures

What is Special Procedures?

The Special Procedures Department at Springhill Medical Center provides many services that are used to diagnose and/or treat numerous types of medical conditions by using imaging techniques to guide them as they thread narrow tubes (catheters) and other very small instruments through blood vessels and other pathways of the body to the site of a problem.  Some conditions that can now be successfully treated with these types of procedures may have previously required surgery.  These procedures generally do not require overnight hospital stays and often involve less pain and smaller incisions than traditional surgeries.
A large variety of procedures are offered in the Special Procedures department.  Listed below are some of the most common procedures:
PICC line placement/replacement/removal (long term IV’s used for antibiotics, chemotherapy, and other long term medications)
Fistulagrams and other Dialysis Procedures
Lumbar Punctures
Facet Blocks
Percutaneous Nephrostomy Tube Placements

As with many tests done in Radiology, some have special instructions that need to be addressed 24- 48 hours prior to the procedure.  Some of these instructions may include: patients may need to hold certain medications for a certain length of time before their procedure, patients who have an allergy to contrast (IVP dye) may need to be prepped prior to procedure, patients may need to recover for up to 6 hours after procedure, or patients may need a driver to come with them.  A member of the Special Procedures team will contact you prior to your appointment to discuss any instructions for your test.  However, if you do not hear from a team member 1-2 days from your appointment date, or if you have any additional questions, please call 251-460-5418 and someone will be happy to assist you.

Hours of Operation

Monday- Friday 6:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Some procedures need to be scheduled during certain times.  Our central scheduling department will be able to assist you or your doctor’s office with scheduling your tests at the appropriate times.  If after your test is scheduled there is an issue that arises with the date and/or time of your procedure, please contact Central Scheduling (251-460-5265) or Special Procedures (251-460-5418) and we will be glad to help.

Special Procedures is located on the first floor with the Radiology Department of the main hospital.  Patients may enter the main hospital entrance and then, upon entering the Main Lobby, go to the left where the Registration/Admitting Department is just around the corner.  Sign in at the designated location and have a seat.  Someone will assist you momentarily.
For all patients who have been “Express Registered”, you may go straight to the Radiology desk, which is a little further down the hallway from Admitting.  If you are unsure if you have Express Registered, please ask for assistance from a team member in admitting.  They will be glad to help and expedite your wait time.
