Newborn Screening Award

June 8, 2011

Ms. Shirley Ezell, RN
Assistant Nurse Manager
Springhill Medical Center

Dear Ms. Shirley Ezell:

Congratulations! This letter serves to notify you that your facility will be recognized as one of three Alabama birthing hospitals having the lowest rate for rejected newborn screening specimens during the period of January 1, 2010, through March 31, 2011. This is an outstanding achievement.

As part of this recognition, you will receive a plaque from the State Health Officer, Dr. Don Williamson, during the Alabama Newborn Screening Conference to be held on Aug. 19, 2011.

Also, in our mission to continually improve newborn screening practices in the state, we require participation in a thirty minute session to discuss the practices your facility has put into place to ensure consistent newborn screening specimen collection results. The focus of your discussion should include:
    • What changes in practice have led to your success?
    • What is the "one thing" that made a big difference?
    • Do you feel that a change in attitude of your staff has contributed to the improvement? If so, how did this change in attitude come about?

Again, congratulations and we look forward to seeing you in August.

Sincerely,
Cindy Ashley, BSN, RN, C
Director, Newborn Screening Program
