SMC First in Mobile To Offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

November 7, 2012

Springhill Medical Center continues its dedication to the residents of the Gulf Coast community by bringing the most up-to-date technologically advanced procedures to the area. The hospital is one of only two centers in the state to offer the FDA approved Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR).

TAVR is a revolutionary and minimally invasive procedure that uses a catheter-based technique to replace the aortic valve for patients with severe aortic stenosis. This procedure is typically for patients who are older and have multiple conditions which put them at high risk or deemed in-operable for the traditional open heart procedure. The TAVR procedure, in coordination with The Valve Center, is performed in Springhill Medical Center’s state-of-the-art hybrid catheterization lab by a multi-disciplinary team of interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, imaging experts with the support of Springhill Medical Center’s dedicated heart team.

TAVR offers severe aortic stenosis patients, who formerly may have faced a life expectancy of less than two years, to have the potential to receive a new heart valve without undergoing the open heart procedure. TAVR will not only greatly diminish their chance of an early death, but it will also improve their quality of life.

Springhill Medical Center is one of a select few in the country and the first on the Gulf Coast to offer this innovative technology.
