First Single-Site Xi Robotic Surgical Procedure Completed at SMC!

June 21, 2016

With about 550 robotic surgical cases now complete, Springhill Medical Center marks the first year of utilizing the da Vinci Xi surgical robot by adding the single-site capability, and, on the morning of June 21, successfully completed the first single-site Xi procedure in the State of Alabama!

Dr. Forrest Ringold of Surgical Association of Mobile, P.A., was the first surgeon in Alabama to utilize the Xi single-site technology for the cholecystectomy, or gall bladder procedure.  The patient had only one incision versus three with the previous robotic surgical minimally invasive method.  And, the incision is hidden in the folds of the belly button making it virtually invisible.

The single-site approach can also be used on various other procedures including hysterectomy and other gynecological procedures, offering millions of women a virtually scarless surgical option.  In fact, Dr. Danilo Herrera performed the first single-site robotic hysterectomy in the state in early July at Springhill Medical Center using da Vinci's most advanced robotic system.
